Simply put, I’m gonna choose my top 5 favourite singles from each of the main groups. I’ve started with C-ute, mainly because they have less singles and they have less singles that I like. SHOCK! being the obvious example – I haven’t even bothered to listen to it properly.
5. Ookina Ai de Motenashite
This was the original “Oh my, what is this?! It’s terrible and yet I’m enthralled!” song. The guilty pleasure if you will. One of the first Japanese songs that I ever heard and therefore a significant part of my initial impression of Japanese music as a whole. BUT SERIOUSLY! I actually LOVE this song. I have to wonder if there’s something horribly wrong with me. Also where I particularly noticed “that one wearing the massive sunglasses” and “that one with the odd teeth”. I don’t judge idols based on looks… nuh-uh.
4. Edo no Temari Uta II
This is where I felt like my fandom was swinging from Berryz to C-ute. Needless to say, that didn’t really last long in the grand scheme of things, but I still love EnTUII. It’s short and so you don’t have to wade through an unprecedented amount of musical interludes (like you tend to have to with H!P songs) and catchy enough. I think this may be their overall best single of all when you weigh up everything, PV+dance shot+costuming+lines+replay value etc. but it’s not my favourite, merely one of them.
3. Forever Love
Epic song indeed. I’m not entirely sure what I have to say about this – other than it’s really part of the Airi and Maimi show, but even then it’s still a perfect upbeat, catchy, dance along song. The fact that whenever I hear it, it immediately creates the image of all the girls dressed in those suits certainly helps it a lot too.
2. Tokaikko Junjou
Because the quality of this song is undeniable. It’s amazingly epic and ultimately a complete trip. Even though I greatly dislike the PV and their outfits that doesn’t kill my enjoyment of the song. I haven’t actively listened to this song in a long time, mainly because my internet is being completely uncooperative, but even so, it’s still my number 2 C-ute release.
1. Shochuu Omimai Moshiagemasu
I nearly hated this song when it was first released. Now I adore it, I adore this throw-back cheesiness and the dance. I’ve completely given up making complaints about line distribution and in regards to C-ute it’s completely futile because it’s not even the Airi AND Maimi Show anymore. It’s just Airi. But off topic. Shochuu is my favourite C-ute song. Yes, even beating Tokaikko, because I make no logical sense as a human being with taste.
Guardians 4 Catch Up February 11, 2010

Honestly, whilst I was very skeptical of Guardians 4 when they were first announced. And I was almost proved right by how sucky the PV for Omakase Guardian was and the fact that the song was kinda blah.
Since I dropped out of the Jpop sphere, they’ve released two more singles. One of which I had no idea existed until I searched on YouTube. I posted when the School Days PV came out and I needn’t say anymore than the fact that I absolutely loved that song, and still do.
However, it is more than possible that PARTY TIME may be even better.
I don’t completely approve of the green, but it’s better than the red and certainly better than the yellow in Going On!
The song more than makes up for it. With that ridiculously catchy Pa pa pa pia and the slightly fail English it easily gets stuck in your conscious. Mitsui Aika still freaks me out slightly – I don’t think I’ll ever get over that, because she has ever since I first got into Morning Musume a couple of years ago. I’m not sure what it is about her, I just don’t like her. On the flip side Risako and Yurina are positively lovely looking. The video is a bit fail, and works way better as just being a dance shot or the like, and the inclusion of scenes from the School Days video/shoot is a little odd. But that cannot dwarf the greatness that is this song.
Going On! just doesn’t beat it, in my opinion. I still enjoy the song a lot, but it’s yet to really grow on me to the extent that School Days and PARTY TIME have.
Guardians 4 are just great. A wonderful unit. I may be biased towards Berryz, and with Koharu graduating Risako may now be my favourite H!P member, but the songs are genuinely amazing (sans Omakase). Another thing I feel I must say, is that they completely own Shugo Chara Egg! now that they’ve been relegated to B-side duty.
Shugo Chara is just an excuse for great music really.

Yes, I disappeared and I have missed a lot.
The next posts will be me catching up as much as possible, because hey! I really should pay attention to more than just Berryz Koubou.

At the risk of sounding like I’m on MSN or some other instant messagings service….
OMG!!
The ‘preview’ for Berryz’s new single had been released and dammit I love it!
I don’t get excited over previews, they annoy me more than anything because I always want to hear the whole song and it feels like forever between the preview and the PV release.
Anyway, I hear lots of Risako and Miyabi, as per usual, I personally have absolutely no issue with that.
I have the idea in my head now that I’m going to absolutely love this song…
Until I get distracted by Kimagure Princess.

Koharu’s graduating?
MY KOHARU IS GRADUATING!!!!
My favourite member of Morning Musume is going to be graduating at the end of MoMusu’s next tour and I never thought this would happen.
Especially not so soon.
This is… this is just… NOOOOOO!
I was sad about Biyuuden but this feels awful.
I wish her all the best and everything but I really wish she could have stuck around in Morning Musume a bit longer. She was really just hitting her stride, her performances were getting better, she was becoming a real force of H!P and now she’s off to do something else.
I want her to continue singing – I hope she will, but as far as I can gather she’s pulled an Erika and has switched to modelling.
Fair enough, but for me that’s boring.
I LOVE YOU KOHARU! DON’T STAY OUT OF A RECORDING STUDIO FOR TOO LONG!!!
(When I’ve calmed down a bit, I’ll probably do a proper post about my love for Koharu but for now…. *CRIES*)
41st Single August 31, 2009

Yep, Morning Musume have announced their 41st single title.

Kimagure Princess/気まぐれプリンセス
I love the title, but I get the feeling that it could potentially end up as another Nanchatte or something…. not that that’s really a bad thing. Nanchatte Renai is probably one of my most favourite Momusu songs – but looking at it objectively, it was practically Diet-Shouganai.
Well, we’ll have to see but Kimagure Princess is out on 21st October and the Single V version is out a week later. It comes in four editions, regular and then A and B each with a DVD and version C having ten different covers….
Yeah, one for each girl and then a group shot. I would’ve thought they would have done that with the milestone single; No.40. But apparently 41 is special too.
Either that, or H!P just really want more money.

Yep, the covers for the 2010 Hello!Project calenders have been released and there’s a couple of things worth noting about them.

Morning Musume’s is nothing to really write home about. Just like last year they’re going for the simple, elegant and generally more mature look.
Black = good. Aika’s hair, however, does not. That would be my only flaw really. I’d be interested to see what’s on the inside but, really, it holds no thrills if it’s anything like the 2009 one.
Unsurprisingly, the girls look amazing… when is that new? But the staircase is not made for nine people.

Berryz Koubou’s confuses me.
They are in penguin suits, which look to be ill-fitting… yet there are rainbows. Someone please explain the connection here.
I mean, there’s a bit of a clash between the mono-chromatic clothing and the arc-en-ciels.
I dunno, I’m still interested in buying it, but I think that’s because my Berryz fandom has resurfaced quite strongly in the past few weeks.

Right. This is the fun one.
The first thing worth noticing is the 5-nin lineup taking effect. And I feel a little bit saddened by that.
Then we get to the WTF?-ness. Sports Festival? Ah, now they have an actual theme, which by no deductive reasoning I can see in the other two.
Then the clothes. They look like they might be serving ice-cream and then having a jolly good old tap dance with Mary Poppins. Hmm…

And then my worst nightmare.
A massive Mano-face staring at me. Needless to say, I won’t be buying this one.
Sono Subete no Ai ni August 26, 2009

I watched Berryz Koubou’s Sono Subete no Ai ni concert the day before yesterday. This
is the first time I’ve actually watched a concert that was just Berryz, the only others I’ve seen them in have been Wonderful Hearts concerts and the battle concert with C-ute.
I wasn’t entirely sure what to expect. I looked at the tracklist before I watched it and a vast majority of it is songs that I’ve never even heard of let alone listened to before.
There were some great moments and then there were some that I’d rather never see again. A little hit and miss, but I love Berryz too much to let that really get in the way.
The DVD kicks of with Dakishimete Dakishimete, which is undoubtedly my favourite recent Berryz release. It proves to be a great concert song, with plenty of room for the wota to jump and chant along with. The thing is… no-one really stands out in it. It feels like a very teamy song, especially the chorus and the choreography, but I suppose that’s a good thing to do at the start of a concert.
The VTR was borderline hideous. The graphics were not good at all, and the text looked like it came from MS word. It was the same for the member VTR in MoMusu’s Platinum 9 Disco concert. Have they really gotten that bored with these things?
But it gives way to good things when one of the best parts of the concerts appears. HAPPY!Stand Up, with the girls dressed as the young, female, Japanese version of the Ghostbusters, waving obnoxiously coloured plastic water guns around. While the song is nearly too long on CD it works great in a live context because of the energy it has.
And then, what is definitely the most random thing I have ever seen in a concert. An accapella version of Gag 100kaibun Aishite Kudasai. I must’ve completely bypassed it on the tracklist because I wasn’t expecting this at all. Risako, Chinami and Maasa shushing the crowd was really cute and the actual song, despite the fact that Momoko is singing it, is really well executed. Proof that these girls have talent!
Strangely enough, I’d never heard Nanchuu Koi wo Yateruu YOU KNOW? before this. I didn’t realise how good a song it actually is. I must’ve listened to it ten times since yesterday. The silver ghostbusting outfits are perfect for the song, but the staging is a little odd – having them all stand in pairs on various parts of the stage doesn’t really work. One thing that always makes me giggle is how serious and into the song Maasa is.
One thing that I would be very happy never to see again is the godawful song Chinami and Maasa do… and then it goes into a sort of okay song with Momoko and Yurina and then into a rather messy Otoko no Ko performance. It was a section that had many faults and even though I love Berryz, I can’t forgive that.
It really goes to show how one live performance can really change my opinion on a song. I had absolutely no feelings toward Seishun Bus Guide or Rival when they were released, to the point where I hadn’t listened to them all the way through even once. But now, for some reason they’ve caught on and I find myself humming the chorus to SBG every so often.
Okay, at first I liked the encore costumes. Then they decided to go and perform Anata Nashi de wa Ikite Yukenai in them. What genius thought that one up eh? It looks rather terrible to see these girls in sort of romantic, regency-esque, powder blue dress dancing and singing a song that was originally performed in plaid.
But then it suddenly gets good for the final song, because it’s the concert’s namesake and a ballad. Therefore powder blue dresses make sense. I’ve always thought that Sono Subete no Ai ni was a surprisingly good song – it was the b-side to Dakishimete and could possibly surpass its’ a-side in my favour-rankings. And this is a really good performance to close the show with, especially with Risako’s big notes and the chorus. I love it.
I always get this bittersweet feeling when I watch the end of a H!P concert. Maybe it’s because I’ve never seen one live, might not get the chance to either, but there’s something slightly off kilter about watching them leave the stage and feeling like I’ve shared the experience with a thousand wota, even though I’m sitting in my living room in England.
If I could, I would very much want to see a Berryz Koubou concert live. Morning Musume are legendary and all and I love, but I think I prefer the sort of kiddy fun that Berryz have. I’m nearly 17 but I still haven’t grown up really and I’d love to indulge that and not be looked at in strange ways by people on the bus. Speaking from personal experience, of course.

If you’ve read the post previous to this one, you may have picked up on a couple of my personal biases.
Sugaya Risako being the first. I was very tempted to just go on and on about her in the School Days post too, but I managed to restrain. Risako is my favourite member of Berryz Koubou – even though she can be vocally awkward, I still love her. I almost always focus on her during lives and PVs and if I’m not careful this could decent into a worship blog. Geez, she’s even my sister’s favourite – and she doesn’t even like idol music.
LinLin is my second or third favourite member of Morning Musume. I was drawn into the H!P fandom a little before Resonant Blue was released and I was running around various blogs looking for information et cetera, and I kept coming across personal rankings, most of which really rated JunJun. I immediately felt a bit sorry for LinLin and thus, began to like her. And then she proved me right by being the awesome that she is.
If you’re curious, my favourite in Morning Musume is Koharu for no good reason and I have trouble deciding whether Eri or LinLin is number two…

A really random album but what it may have lacked in sense, it made up for in sheer excitement. This is the revival album of the… century? I think that would be exaggerating a little.
Here’s a breakdown of my favourite bits;
- High-King - We all thought that when Cinderella ended we wouldn’t hear anymore from this all too awesome group. This is where Maeda Yuuka really showed what she’s made of (Shugo Chara Egg was kind of faily, in a good way).
Their song was DIAMONDS, originally by Princess Princess. The only song I know off the top of my head, because it’s the only one I knew prior to the album. It’s a catchy, damn happy song and it lives up to the original in terms of awesome. - Shin Minimoni – The song is pretty fun and the Eggs are good, but I’m only really interested in LinLin being the leader. I adore LinLin and I’m so pleased to see her getting more recognition within H!P and not just being shunted towards the back with JunJun at any given opportunity. This is one of the new revival groups that I hope will get at least a couple of decent releases and PVs.
- Zoku Biyuuden – OH MY EFFING GOD! Risako in the new Biyuuden. One of my favourite H!P girls in the resurrection of my favourite past unit. I practically fell off the sofa when I heard ONLY YOU for the first time. Not to mention the fact that the song is a really awesome, synthy trip. The other two-thirds of Zoku Biyuuden consist of Sayumi and JunJun. I don’t like Sayumi much, she gets on my nerves for a reason that I can’t define and I had real trouble identifying JunJun… but this unit is still all kinds of awesome!
- For You… LinLin’s Solo – Geez, how gorgeous this song is! And the fact that LinLin was chosen to have a solo on the same album that both Ai and Reina have their own solos on, must say something about the calibur of this girls voice. I adore the chorus, this song is just perfect for LinLin. I love it.
